ABOUT
Hi! My name is Yassmine (Yes-Meen), and I am a children’s book illustrator based in the Washington D.C. area. I received my BFA in Art & Design from the University of Michigan’s Stamps School of Art & Design in 2024. Additionally, I completed a semester-long study abroad program in Illustration at the University of Arts London in 2023.
Reading was one of my very first introductions to illustration and the power that it has in conveying stories. I remember frequently going to the library as a kid with my mom and siblings and spending hours just staring at the elaborate illustrations within the books that I read. I loved picking out details in the illustrated scenes and imagining myself entering the characters’ worlds and joining them on their adventures. After reading those illustrated stories, I would go home and try creating my own versions. Whether it was drawing a comic or sitting at my family’s home computer and writing whatever silly ideas came to mind for a short story, I loved the process of letting my imagination run free. Fast forward to now, after many years of moving back and forth between different interests, I’m finally returning to the same creative passions that I had as a kid.
I create all of my illustrations using watercolor and frequently incorporate other media like gouache and colored pencil for line work and detail work. I used to work digitally in late high school and early college, but after experiencing several repetitive strain injuries to my arm, I decided to return to traditional media, which I found to be less straining on my hand, as well as more aligned with my current creative goals and style.
Outside of my work, I enjoy reading, spending time with family, and going on walks.
